The Transformation of Life Back Home
When most people think of WWI, they usually think of men in trenches, dead laying in fields, tanks, airplanes, and guns. Nobody really thinks about how it affected life at home. Women stepped up to take the men's places at work in factories and other jobs, which earned them a profile and rights in society that they previously were denied. The poorer and poverty-stricken citizens' lives improved due to an increase in open jobs as well.
Pubs were closed at earlier times and weren't open for long, ensuring that the nations' citizens were kept fit for long hours and many days at work.
The Woman's Land Army was created to maximize the output from the land to feed the nation and counteract the effect of the U-boats that were destroying the output of food to soldiers. Citizens back home felt the effect of this too as everyday items such as sugar, meat, butter, and oil were rationed.
Another characteristic of home front life was aerial bombing. Citizens would wake late at night to shaking windows and loud booms as bombs crashed down on the home front.
Many of the citizens in countries at war also felt the strain of censorship as political leaders tried to keep gruesome details and losses from the war on a NTK basis.
