Assassination!
29 June 1914
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, along with his wife, Sophie, were assassinated yesterday. They were shot by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip while visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia. The reason for assassination was thought to be that bitterness for the Turks from the Serbians still existed because of the loss of independence from the Battles of Kosovo. The anniversary of the first of these battles happened to be on that very day. Coincidence? I think not. The outcome of these deaths is sure to be a war of massive proportions in the already tense European states. |
